The Bible
The Bible is a library of sixty-six books written over a period of 1500 years by over forty inspired men of varying backgrounds and experiences. The Bible is God's revelation, an uncovering of God's truths to mankind. The Bible discusses important themes such as the creation of the universe (Genesis 1:1) and man (Genesis 2:7), the downfall of man due to sin and its consequences (Genesis chapter 3 and Romans 3:23; 5:12), and the great plan of salvation which is God's plan that saves us from sin (Romans 1:16). The Bible makes the claim to be the word of God and for this reason we expect it to be free from all errors and contradictions. If studied honestly, it will be found free of such. Since it is the word of God, we must recognize that it is all sufficient and authoritative in the lives of men (John 12:48). Here are some suggested Bible verses to study to help you understand the importance of the word of God.
The power of God's word (Heb. 4:12; 11:3).
It gives light (Psalm 119:105).
It cleanses (John 15:3).
It purifies (I Pet. 1:22).
It is God's power to save (Rom. 1:16; James 1:21-22).
It is given by the inspiration of God (II Tim. 3:16; II Pet. 1:20-21).
God's Plan of Salvation
The greatest question that any man can ask concerning his soul and its eternal state is, "What must I do to be saved?" This is a question on which the Bible places considerable emphasis. Consider some of these questions in the New Testament asked by various men concerning their own salvation (Matt. 19:16; Acts 2:37; Acts 9:6; Acts 16:30).
Is Salvation Conditional?
Are there some conditions that must be met by man? Does man play a part in his own salvation? The question, "What must I do to be saved?" implies that to be the case. Notice the following passages that stress man's role in his eternal destination (Matt. 7:21-24; John 5:28-29; Heb. 5:8-9; II Thess. 1:7-8).
God requires obedience to His word, for Jesus himself said, "If you love me keep my commandments." (John 14:15)
"Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" Acts 16:30
The Gospel Must be HEARD. Romans 10:17; John 8:32
The Gospel Must be BELIEVED. John 8:24; Mark 16:16
Sins Must be REPENTED OF (a change of mind and corresponding change in behavior). Luke 13:3, 5; Acts 2:38
Christ Must be CONFESSED. Matt. 10:32-33; Rom. 10:9-10
There must be BAPTISM (Immersion) for the Remission of Sins. Acts 2:38; I Peter 3:21
There Must be CHRISTIAN GROWTH and FAITHFULNESS. I Peter 2:2; Rev. 2:10
Three Essentials of New Testament Baptism
(1) The correct form (Rom. 6:3-4; Col. 2:12). Baptism is a "burial" and a "type" of the resurrection. We are saved by the blood of Christ (Rev. 1:5; Eph. 1:7; Heb. 9:14), it is in His death where His blood was shed (John 19:33-34), and it is in the likeness of His death where we contact that blood. We become partakers in His death when we are "baptized into His death" (Rom. 6:3).
(2) The right motive (Rom. 6:17). It is obeyed from the heart.
(3) The right purpose (Acts 2:38; Acts 22:16; I Pet. 3:21). Baptism is for the forgiveness of sins.
